CS4FN birthday event – finding the Graduate Centre

If you’re coming to hear Paul Curzon’s CS4FN talk “The illusion of good software design” on Tuesday 6th May (talk 5-6, doors and some magic from 4.30pm, snacks + more magic 6-7pm) this is where it’s taking place.

This is what the Graduate Centre looks like from the outside. The What3Words locator for the entrance is https://what3words.com/fixed.reader.apples. The entrance looks like this on Google Maps. At time of writing there is some scaffolding up (not captured by Google!) see photo at end…

1. Directions to Venue (Graduate Centre)
Entrance is on Bancroft Road, off Mile End Road

From Stepney Green tube station [NEAREST]
District | Hammersmith & City lines

  • The nearest tube station is Stepney Green tube station. Exit the station and turn left (you are now on Mile End Road (A11) and Globe Road (B120) is on your left (you’ll cross Globe Road).
  • Keep walking up Mile End Road, turn left into Bancroft Road (you will walk under a stone bridge announcing the Faculty of Engineering, keep going. You will soon pass the Infusion shop on the left. The Graduate Centre is the large glass building on the right. Don’t go any further than the green and black panelled building (G.E. Fogg) which spans the road.

If you are arriving by bus it’s the 25 or 205 which will drop you closest, at Bus Stop D. Buses 309 and 339 also stop nearby.

From Mile End tube station
Central | District | Hammersmith & City lines

  • Mile End station is a little further away (but not much).
  • If you want to take the bus (25 or 205) Stop C is to your right as you exit the station
  • If you want to just walk then turn left as you exit the station (you are on Mile End Road) and keep walking in that direction.
  • You can cross to the other side of Mile End Road at the Sainsbury’s and keep walking in the same direction.
  • When you cross the road you’ll be looking at a very large white building called the Queen’s Building, walk past the Engineering Building and then turn right into Bancroft Road.
  • You will walk under a stone bridge announcing the Faculty of Engineering, keep going. You will soon pass the Infusion shop on the left. The Graduate Centre is the large glass building on the right. Don’t go any further than the green and black panelled building (G.E. Fogg) which spans the road.

You can also alight at Bus Stop E (Queen Mary University of London) next to a Sainsbury’s.

Other bus routes that go nearby include 309 (Stepney Green station) and 339 (passes part of Mile End Road).

There’s an accessible gender neutral loo on the ground floor next to the GRAD café which
may be closed but we will have snacks and something to drink after the talk.
At least the scaffolding goes nicely with QMUL’s branding 🙂

3. Latecomers / gallery entrance

The main entrance to the Peston Lecture theatre (“GCG10”) will take you to the front of the theatre. Latecomers can just come right on in, don’t be shy 🙂

But if you are feeling shy and want to sneak in at the back please follow the signs to the Gallery (GC111 Peston Lecture Theatre Gallery) which is on the Mezzanine floor between the Ground and the First floor.

a) By the stairs

To the right of the main lecture theatre entrance is the door to the East Stairs. Take these to the first floor and follow the signs to the gallery.

b) By the lift – route is wheelchair accessible

Select 1A (this is the mezzanine floor between ground and 1) on the keypads next to the lifts. It will direct you to lift L2 (the middle lift) and the exit will be the opposite set of doors from the ones you go in. Exit at 1A and follow the route which will be signposted and doors open. When returning back to the ground floor use the 0 button to call the lift.

Press 1A on the keypad outside the lift for the mezzanine. You’ll be instructed to use lift L2
(but don’t get in L2 without having first told it where you want to go.

Either (a) or (b) will take you to the back of the tiered auditorium, marked in yellow in the image below.

The route to the gallery will bring you to the back of the auditorium.
